Description:These recommendations update previous recommendations regarding human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) counseling and testing of patients in acute-care hospital settings (1). The revision was prompted by additional information regarding both the rates at which patients admitted to some acute-care hospitals have unrecognized HIV infection and the potential medical and public health benefits of recognizing HIV infection in persons who have not developed acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.
